Belly Button Surgery

What is Belly Button Surgery?

An umbilicoplasty is a medical term for bellybutton surgery. It's a relatively simple procedure that is used to make the appearance of a belly button more pleasing. It is a quick and relatively painless surgery that many people are resorting to in order to obtain a more attractive looking midriff. Often performed in conjunction with a tummy tuck, Umbilicoplasty should make the bellybutton more aesthetically pleasing.

Another surgery centred around the bellybutton site is the Laparoscopy. This procedure is a key hole surgery where cameras and mechanical arms are put inside the bellybutton and the stomach cavity as a way in to avoid massive scarring.

Why have Belly Button Surgery?

An umbilicoplasty, referred to by plastic surgeons as “button surgery” or “belly button surgery” is usually found by individuals who are self-conscious about their appearance in swim wear or midriff baring outfits. This includes clothing such as low-rise jeans and low cut bathing suits. More often the umbilicoplasty is reconstructive surgery. This is a corrective procedure to enhance the size and shape of the belly button.

Women are more often concerned with the way their belly button looks in a bikini, being pierced or decorated with other forms of body jewellery or tattoos. Revealing outfits in the world of celebrity and fashion demand beautiful, belly buttons. In general, it is actors, dancers, models, lifeguards and fitness instructors who are most likely to choose this cosmetic surgery.

Some Reasons for Umbilical Reconstruction

At birth, your umbilical cord was cut and maybe you were left with a belly button that is not considered aesthetically pleasing. There are many different belly button shapes and sizes which make everyone unique, almost like a finger print. Some are not concerned with how their bellybutton looks, while others are.

'Innie' and 'Outie' Belly Buttons

Generally, people are usually categorised as having either an “innie” or an “outie” belly button. In the case of the innie bellybutton the remains of the umbilical cord have shrunk and inverted inside the belly, hence the innie. In the case of an outie bellybutton, the remaining stub of the umbilical cord may create a bump or a mound that protrudes outwards.

The belly button that is generally (and unfairly to some) considered to be most beautiful is the innie, having a symmetrical vertical slit. This symmetry goes way back to caveman days when asymmetry was perceived that the person may have parasites. Belly buttons that don't cause this kind of subconscious aversion are generally round and flat.

You may be considering an umbilicoplasty for any of the following legitimate reasons:
  • You want to wear belly jewellery but you have a belly button that has no folds of skin to support the jewellery.
  • Your belly button has been misshapen from birth and you simply don’t like the look of it.
  • Your belly button has been scarred by surgery or an accident in the past.
  • You have had a tummy tuck and it has changed the appearance of your belly button.
  • You have a small hernia that causes your belly button to stick out.
  • You have a recessed belly button that falls to one side.
  • Your belly button has changed shape due to extreme weight loss or weight gain.
  • Your belly button has changed shape due to pregnancy or a Caesarian section.

Belly Button Surgery Consultation and Procedure

When you sit down with a plastic surgeon to discuss having an umbilicoplasty they will usually give you a choice of shapes that are possible for you to select from. Generally, most plastic surgeons choose a vertical slit shape that has a 'T' shape at the top.

The surgical procedure usually takes from 30 minutes to 2 hours. Usually it is performed under local anaesthetic but if the patient is particularly nervous they may be put to sleep. Usually, there are no scars as the incision is typically made inside the belly button and very few people experience any large scale bruising or discomfort. Although stitches are required, they are usually dissolving thread which, naturally take a week or two to completely disperse.

As with any surgery, there are people who should probably not consider having belly button surgery. These include those with a history of uncontrollable bleeding, an immune system disorder or a history of psychological illness to do with self-image or self esteem.

An umbilicoplasty is one of the quickest and least expensive plastic surgeries that exist. To achieve a beautiful belly button, umbilicoplasty is said to be the best procedure. The results of the surgery are considered permanent unless it is somehow compromised by a pregnancy, extreme weight gain or another type of surgery to the abdomen. Even though it is a minor surgery it can go a long way to making an individual feel less self-conscious about wearing clothing that expose the midriff.
