The Hole Truth

There are so many rumours about piercing bellybuttons, what can and can't be done. So here, we attempt to bring you.. the hole truth. Well, we thought it was a clever play on words...

Innie Piercing

InniePiercing an innie is fairly straight forward as there is usually a flap of skin at the top of the bellybutton, sometimes referred to as a hood, that the needle will travel through so you can adorn it with your choice of jewellery.

However, it's not a simple case of slipping through a needle and - hey presto - your bellybutton is pierced. There are a few golden rules to consider.

Firstly, you mustn't try and do this yourself. Why? Because you're trying to push something through your skin. Even though you cut yourself and your skin seems like butter, it's very, very tough and resilient. You mustn't try and pierce your bellybutton with a sewing needle. You have to use a hollow point needle, which is what a professional will use. this is very sharp and actually channels a hole through your bellybutton flap.

Secondly, once you have it done, you have to let it heal and look after it. If you don't, you run the risk of a serious and nasty infection. Healing time is usually 6-9 months, maybe more for some people and throughout that time you have to bathe it, keep it clean and don't mess with it.

Outie Piercing

Outie PiercingYes, it can be done. As long as you have enough skin to pinch at the top, bottom or side of your bellybutton, it can be done. You can also get pierced actually through the outie part, although some pierces will not do this.

Again, if you get a 'No' don't try doing it yourself or you could cause yourself some damage, also quite a bit of discomfort. Some piercers won't do it on account that they have never done it and don't even want to attempt to do it. Some won't because of rejection.

Rejection is basically your body pushing out the metal because it's not supposed to be there. It's a healing thing and your body's natural scientific way of dealing with foreign objects, they are naturally rejected.

We have more pictures of piercings in our Gallery. If you would like to add your picture to the gallery, you may. If you would like to talk about bellybutton piercings, you can do in our forum where there are discussions going on about piercings right now.
